Mental health is of grave concern to psychologists, counselors, the clergy and health experts. This is in response to the increased cases of suicide, depression, phobias and anxiety attacks in society. These are issues rooted in faulty thinking and portray a lack of mental health. Did you know that you are as healthy as your mind? Your mind is a key player in your health and wellbeing.

Our lives reflect the state of our minds. That is why God’s word says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Psalm 23:7).

How do you ensure the health of your mind at all times?

1) Renew your mind with God’s word (Romans 12:2).

When your thoughts align with God’s, you will not worry about the things of this world or wonder what the will of God is upon your life. God’s word shows you how to deal with every situation you face and you will not lose sleep over insignificant things.

2) Be spiritually minded (Romans 8:6).

To rely on a carnal mind is death and to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Focus on the things of the Spirit and your mind will have peace and life-giving thoughts. Avoid carnal thinking which leads to negative thoughts. Set your mind on serving God, seeking God’s kingdom first, obeying God’s commands and abiding in Christ.

3) Take everything to God in prayer (Philippians 4:6-7).

A good antidote for anxiety is to pray over every troubling situation in your life. God promises that his peace which surpasses human understanding will guard your heart and mind. Know that God hears your prayers and always answers them.

4) Meditate on good things (Philippians 4:8).

Which things? Those that are true, noble, just, lovely and praiseworthy. This will keep your mind positive. Reflect on how God has been good to you.

5) Stop negative thoughts in their tracks (2 Corinthians 10:5).

If a thought doesn’t align with what God says in his word regarding a situation, don’t allow it to linger in your mind. Replace it with God’s word. You’ll notice that your mind remains positive and peaceful which is key to maintaining the health of your mind.

6) Focus on God (Isaiah 26:3).

When you keep your eyes on God always and not on your problems, God promises you his perfect peace. Focusing on the storm in your life will cause you to drown in sorrow, negativity and lack of faith. When Peter was walking on water towards Jesus, he succeeded for a while then a strong wind sidetracked him and he started sinking. He had taken his eyes off Jesus because he was afraid of the wind (Matthew 14:28-30).

When your thoughts are out of control, declare “I have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16) and you will control your thoughts.
