The Christian Meditation Journal - Meditation with Faith and Purpose

I pray the answer is YES! It is the desire of every Christian to spend more time with God. Having an intimate time with God each day refreshes your spirit, blesses your soul and makes you hearken unto the work of the Lord.

Time alone with God is not inclusive of the corporate time we spend with other Christians in church services, fellowship or other spiritual events. These are part of the Christian walk but are not sufficient in achieving intimacy with God.

The busyness of life and the distractions of the world can rob us of time alone with God. Yet we are to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2).

The five ways listed below will help you spend more time with God.

1) Be purposeful

Making a conscious decision to spend time with God gives you the motivation to re-arrange your life and work to make it possible. Other things will have to come after him. Set time aside when you can meet with God and pay no attention to other things, even your cell phone.

2) Be still

Many times we go to God with a mind full of worries, cares, unfinished work, and many other things. It is hard to have a fruitful time with God when you have a full mind. Learn to be still before the Lord. Hush your thoughts and allow God to minister to you. You’ll enjoy being in his presence and even long for it.

3) Spend less time on Social Media

It’s amazing what the images of bucket lists, colorful weddings, places visited, celebrities met can do to you. They can leave you with hang-ups that make you angry at God for your own unfulfilled dreams. It is hard to have an attitude of gratitude in this state. Spending less time on Facebook and Instagram and more time with God will not make you lose out on anything that he cannot provide for you.

4) Refocus your attention

If your time with God has more prayer requests and less praise and worship, you will find it to be a dry time. Focus on worshiping and glorifying God and you will feel refreshed, comforted, hopeful, and healed. You can’t wait for the next time with him.

5) Meditate on the goodness of God

When you contemplate how good God is, and what he has done for you and through you, you will grow to love him more and desire more of him. You will spend more time with him as a result. God exhorts us in Joshua 1:8 to meditate on his word day and night with a promise, “Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Meditate on God’s word daily for it showcases his goodness.

By spending more time with God, you will trust him with your life instead of worrying and striving to make things happen on your own.
